Default Scott Samuels Is Back - PESA

I figure this belongs here if anywhere.

If you don't know what any of this is about, count your blessings.

I've been quiet for far too long.

Just a heads-up, my community portal corner wont' be like others.

You and I both know many of you are suffering out here.

I can't promise that I can fix it, even with the nearly three decades of experience I have using this medium.

But, if I retain my silence, as I have for three plus years, it helps no one.

I have no answers, just ideas.
I have no solutions, just methods.
I have no quick fix, just concepts.

Read the blog if you want to read it. I'm tired of being treated as a celebrity.

I want to be known as someone who truly gives a (bad word for fecal matter belongs here)

Best,

Scott

(and no, I'm not Wingo. Stop yelling at me in PM. I like Wingo but I won't be screamed at in PM because of his moves.)

Okay, backgrounder...

I'm the guy who invented auction tools and services back in 1996 via Honesty. 1997 I started Honesty in my house. Traffic wise, we peaked at #22 globally, before we were funded in any capacity.

Andale, in 2000, bought my company. It'a a long story, one that I don't feel like telling any longer.

Eventually Andale died.

In '03, I started Ethical (another long story, one that will never be told from from this keyboard) in '05, it went under. That same year, and through '05, I was the title sponsor of PESA's summits.

Prior to the counters, all the other auction tools, and Honesty, I ran what was like the 5th or 6th social network ever back on an an Apple computer.

Before that I ran one of the first 55/110 baud BBS systems ever. I came to eBay in late '95, studied it for most of '96, and registered in Jan '97.

I've been online for almost 30 years and view this (e-commerce) in a different way than most folks.

I don't spin.
I don't mince words.
I don't say the right things for popularity reasons.

And I NEVER say the wrong things to push another member's buttons.

I say what I mean.
I do what I say.
And, well, I tend to be long winded.

Rarely, if ever, do I post on here or anywhere. I never really have, even when I was running my companies.

Some people hate me, some people love me. But I'm not here to talk about that. I'm not a celebrity in my own eyes, but others have said that simply because I've endorsed books, been featured on TV, etc. Short form --- I think the label about celebrity is friggin' silly.

Like you, I put my pants on one leg at a time (sorry gals, I was going to say skirt, but it just didn't fit in this post. )

That said, I do know my trade.. very very well.

Hopefully, we can learn from each other. I know damned well I learn from reading what you folks say, and I read this place more than once daily.

Anyway, that's 'me' in short, synopsis form.

Lastly, I do understand that my initial post may have rubbed people wrong. It wasn't intended to do that, and if it struck you wrong, I do, seriously and sincerely, apologize.

When the blog is up (it'll be part of the PESA community portal) I'll pop another thread on here. As I've said, it won't be the same old, same old. Spend three decades online and you end up having a different perspective on this medium.

Best,

Scott (two t's, not one. )

TP0,

I got ripped on that blog courtesy of Ethical (I also endorsed his book, but that's a different topic.)

The funny thing is one of the people that ripped me, per se, didn't actually do it.

The person who 'posted' was just a name one of the people who were trying to take me out used to spoofslam me.

To be dead straight, I know what was said about me, but I really, truly don't read much of it.

Online... your words are your actions.

They refect you and only you.

What others say is their opinion, which can be twisted. What you say, your words, are your actions.

In 18 months, people will start to realize this.

Best,

Scott

See, told ya he'd be back, got back before I posted.
Honesty was good.
Auction Watch was bad.

30 years eh?
That's a very long time.
I look forward to reading and thanks for taking an interest in the cause here.

Scott,

I used Honesty back before Andale got involved. Shortly after they got in I left.
I've used a lot of different things over the years.
It was a lot more fun back then.
The people left are hard core sellers, some part timers, and closet cleaners.
The hard core sellers to the bone just need a functional site to sell on.
Ebay doesn't seem to want that role anymore.
The top camera accessory sellers on ebay are all selling counterfeit Chinese and India junk.

Where's the blog going to be?

Way back in 1999, as one of the few Brits selling on ebay, I used Pongo for images and Honesty for a counter.

I can remember being sat at my PC, emailed Honesty with a problem/request for help, and got an almost immediate personal reply, that email developed into a chat and am pretty sure was also sent a link to a photo of the Honesty team at that time ?

Yea, we did things like that.
Corporate wasn't an option.

You send an email, we respond to the email.

With caring.
With realism.
With passion.

It was our mantra.

Now, tell me, can PESA do the same?

Scott Regards,

Yea and no, Andy.

I have a legal agreement that restricts me from talking too openly (uh, this is my own damned fault -- I insisted on the agreement and had it written.)

I can say this, it's a site that creates one continual user feed. That is, it grabs new users on a daily basis, flows them into our database, and then natural word of mouth effect takes place thereafter. The process is similar to what I've used all my life, but more more targeted, and has very little to do with e-commerce... yet.

That much I know I can say.

Lemme check with my counsel as to where I can go here.

I'm not being a jerk.. I'm just trying to be consistent and the other people involved have to play by the same rules as I do.

It wouldn't be right for me for me to have a separate set of rules for my co-workers and another set for myself.

Best,

Scott

Thank you Tony.

I never really left.. okay, I did... kinda.

I got scared. I was hurt. I had people spread the most outrageous smack about me.

So, against my better judgement. I closed my mouth and castrated my online voicebox.

The economy is in beyondhell.

Ebay is lost and confused and still loves you even if you can't see it.

I have no answers, but I cannot look in the mirror and say that I was really trying for these past few years.

Now, well, judge for yourself. You're all sharp people.

And maybe I'm just full of hot air.

That said, I don't think that last statement is real.

I calculated several weeks ago that Scott would pop back in to public view in the 3rd of 4th week of October. The reason was this ad which appeared at the top of an Auctionbytes newsletter on September 7:

Quote:
Coming October 2008: The most efficient management tools
ever developed for eBay sellers.

List & schedule items up to 10 times faster than you can using
tools like Auctiva, Vendio, Marketworks, or ChannelAdvisor!

Brought to you by the person who invented the industry
more than 10 years ago, the next generation of online auction
management will set you apart from your competition.

List more, do more, sell more, all in less time!
Public release will be October 2008 - watch for it.
I saw that ad and I thought - could that prose be from anyone but Scott?

The ad was repeated at the top of another Auctionbytes newsletter a few days later.

That's very interesting indeed, Irene.

His Twitter thing has some stuff we've all heard before...

is optimistic because a change was made in his industry that will allow him to launch his new venture without funding. 11:20 AM Oct 22nd from web

And this will get users (1MM after 15 mos) 11:20 AM Oct 22nd from web

And it has a dual-edge revenue model. 11:20 AM Oct 22nd from web

But look at this:
http://neilgorman.com/

My fellow Trust Agents: I have a scheme!

As of late I have really wanted to get a certain kind of investment from the various high powered trust agents on the web…

This desire has lead me to do a bunch of thinking about ways that people go about getting regular financial capital versus how they go about getting social capital. How are the investments of these two forms of capital similar and different from one and other? Thinking about this has created a sort of scheme that I’m launching / announcing via this post.

~1~

Lets take a look at a situation that might occur in the “real world” with financial capital first:

Lets say that you have a great idea for a new product or service in the “real world”. Because you think the idea is good you invest your own time (nights and weekends for most people) and your own (limited) money into the idea and create a working prototype. After that you look at what you have created and maybe think to your self something like “Dame this idea is pretty solid! I want to take it to the next level.”

Nonetheless, however great you think your idea / product / service is it seems to you realize that you have taken the idea as far as it can go, and to take it further your going to need to get some something that you don’t have to make it grow any bigger. To put it another way you realize that you need some sort of funding.

Funding is great because it can allow the person (or group of people) developing a product or service to get more raw material that is needed, and it can allow them to quit a day job and work on their developing their idea / product / service full time.

There are lots of way to get funding, but it seems to me that most people in this situation turn to a group of potential investors (i.e. VC people) and present the product to them. If the VC person(s) like the idea they will invest capital. If the VC people don’t really dig the idea that much they will say “Thanks, but not thanks” then keep looking for a better idea that they can invest in.

VC people want some sort of a RETURN on their investment, so in return for taking the funding they offer the person(s) with the original idea give the VC some sort of legal ownership of the idea / product / service. That way when the idea goes public, or is bought by a larger company the VC person makes their original investment and then some more back.

In short: the VC investor gives capital to get capital.

~2~

Next let’s look into the realm of social capital.

(Notice / disclaimer / warning: I’m going to use myself as an example here. (Rather than using an abstract concept of a “developer” and a “idea / product / service” as I did in section one above.)

I have been working on developing and expressing my ideas through this here blog that your reading. Recently I sat back and looked at my ideas and thought “Hmm. These ideas seem pretty solid. I’d really like to take my ability to talk about them (to an audience) to the next level!” The problem being that I don’t really know how to make that happen. I have a day job, and bills, so my time and money are really sort of tapped out.

Trust agents like Chris Brogan, Julien Smith, Mitch Joel, Merlin Mann, and Cory Doctorow are who I see as the VC people of the “social media” world. I want them them to invest in me, my ideas, my blog, my podcast, etc by linking to me in their blog posts, talking about me in their podcasts, or at conferences. So how to I make it happen with out just cold emailing them and out right begging them to make people think my stuff is cool?

I’m not sure if it will work, but this is what I’m going to try.

1. I have my ideas about trust as a form of social currency developed.
2. I have created a small amount of what I think is quality work (expression of my ideas via blogging).
3. I have an understanding of a few ways that I can grab attention from the people that I want attention from (other than just cold emailing). Mainly linking to them in my own post, and tagging the post with their names… If I’m right this is sort of like shining the equivalent of a Brogan / Smith / Joel / Mann / Doctorow signal out into the night time sky that is the internet.
4. Sit back and hope that as they read this post they will think “Hot shit and happy damn. This Gorman guy is smart. I should invest social capital into him and his ideas by linking to him, and encourage my own readers to check him out on a regular basis.”

~Fin~

That’s it for now, but I have a post in the works that continues to talk about the ways that regular investment of capital, and investment of social capital are very different from one and other. If you like what I have said thus far please stay tuned.

Sounds like another multi level marketing scheme to me!

Better line all those investors' doors with some kind of diamond coating!

I remember that Neil Gorman name from somewhere, was he part of that EthicalTools scam too?

Some of what Neil Gorman was saying plays right into what former Honesty/Andale/Vendio guy Christian is doing these days.

http://www.sellercircle.com/

Friends and Groups
The friends that you add will appear on your Seller Circle page. The more friends you add, the more buyers will find your page. We like to think of friends as "social feedback". The more friends you have, the more confident your buyers will be. The groups that you create or join also appear on your page.

I really don't think Christian has anything to do with Scott. He was way smarter than that, at least it always seemed so. They have some photos from eBay Live and there's no Scott to be seen on Flickr.

This "social feedback" "social capital" stuff all crosses paths though, and all goes back to the "reputation capital" talks from AuctionWatch 10 years ago.

Yes, Neil was involved with Ethical. He was a good, smart kid who wanted to be a teacher. Must be around 26 or 27 now. He and Scott had a falling out, but Scott may have re-recruited him, dammit.

Hi Scott,

Great to see you back out here. Looking forward to hearing what you have to say.

Didn't you say you had something coming down the line soon? Can you talk about it yet?

Andy
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

God, that sounds like so many of us that were 1st posting on Auction Ethics.

Only problem was........no one (or VERY FEW) was talking about previous happenings with Scott.....Honesty & after was a smaller group of folks that got screwed than with Ethical.

If Scott THINKS HE was scared & hurt, he has NO CLUE!

One thing I've learned over the years.........1 person can tell you a story, then you can pass that on to someone else & so on. And by the time the story comes BACK to you, you're lucky if there is still ANY of the true story is left in it. And everytime it gets TOLD its DIFFERENT....because none of it is TRUE anymore.

BUT, when a group of people can tell you the same story, with the same details over & over & over & over & NONE OF THE DETAILS CHANGE, there's a pretty good chance that there HAS to be something to it. Everyone may have a personal spin on it, but if the basic details stay the same......there has to be something there.

Take for instance the Story of Scott Samuel.....been online since Baud days, DOS chatbords etc, Founder of Honesty etc ad nauseam.....that part of his story never changes, & few dispute it.

HOWEVER, the story of Auction ethics/Ethical/company closing etc follows several different trails & people are/were told different things. I was told something different, because i was "on the fringe".

BUT if you ask the people who were INVOLVED in THE STORY of Ethical, their side of the story stays the same.........

HMMMMMMMM

Coincidence????

Maybe, but it seems just a little strange that all their storys don't have different endings, & all fingers point in 1 direction.........with his story, depending on WHO he is talking to, depends on HOW the story ends............

Just gotta make ya wonder, know what I mean?????

JMHO, FWIW

Good catch, Irene, on the Auctionbytes ad. Nobody else does have quite that style!

I couldn't even make myself read through one of his posts that Bobby copied. My eyes start to glaze over about half way through.

Somebody call a doctor, Scott's back off his meds.

Damn, Ray. Talk about someone that has been quiet far too long! Looks like it takes something special to being you out of the woodwork, eh?

Here is a pic of the cock smoker at ebay live 2008. From what i understand, no one was impressed.

At least there were no young boys there.

Scott never did try to prove that any of us did anything that he claimed we did against Ethical. Nor did he ever deny or try to deny any of what we claimed.

He is scared to death of God and should be. He will die a violent death and should. It will probably be from someones Mother or Father.....maybe his own.

Pesa will remember what he cost their members.....He thinks he saved Pesa. He thinks he saved God.

Fact is, he is a lazy fuck.

Hi Mike, there's nothing like a Scott Samuel thread for drawing out the ancient spirits.

Dave, you were right. I was "wrong wrong wrong" about Scott.

(I still wouldn't trust you any more than I'd trust Scott though Dave, Seriously.)
